UNHCR News Story: As some 30,000 flee to Liberia, UNHCR urges help for civilians in besieged Abidjan district

As some 30,000 flee to Liberia, UNHCR urges help for civilians in besieged Abidjan district

GENEVA, March 1 (UNHCR) – The UN refugee agency on Tuesday reiterated its mounting concern about citizens trapped in a conflict-torn district of Cote d'Ivoire's commercial hub, Abidjan. Some 30,000 Ivorians have fled to Liberia since fresh fighting erupted about a week ago in the northern suburb of Abobo and other parts of the country. In Liberia, they join some 40,000 refugees.

Weeks of simmering tension have boiled over between supporters of the main rivals in November's presidential election, which both sides claimed to have won. Last Friday, High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres appealed for a halt to the fighting in Abidjan so that civilians could be allowed to leave.

"Today we are repeating that call. There must be no targeting of civilians. All efforts must be made to prevent civilians being placed in harm's way," UNHCR's chief spokesperson, Melissa Fleming, told journalists in Geneva.

UNHCR staff in Abidjan, the commercial capital of Cote d'Ivoire, said the situation in Abobo remains grim. The district is home to an estimated 1.5 million people. Many have already fled, but armed groups are reportedly preventing others from leaving.

"Of particular concern to us are the risks for people who may have difficulties with moving, including the elderly, the sick, and pregnant women," said Fleming, adding that "as of yesterday, people were still fleeing Abobo, taking advantage of a brief lull in fighting."

Church authorities in Cote d'Ivoire said some 60 families, mainly women and children, were trapped in a church in Abobo where they were being prevented from leaving by armed men. They have no food, no water and no sanitary facilities, and dead bodies are said to be lying nearby.

UNHCR monitoring teams, which have been present on the outskirts of Abobo, have heard other reports of people being prevented from leaving the areas of fighting. Some families have been forced to hand over money or personal possessions to be allowed to leave. There are reports of many dead bodies, buses burned and shops looted, and of young militiamen attacking people inside their homes.

Those who have already made it out are having to contend with rising transportation costs as thousands of families try to board taxis, buses or private cars to reach safer neighbourhoods or their home villages. Taxi drivers are reported to be refusing to take people to some destinations in other parts of the city because of reports of gunfire over the weekend.

Separately, in western Cote d'Ivoire most of the 9,000 internally displaced people at the Catholic mission in the town of Duekoue have left out of fear of new conflict. The camp UNHCR was planning to build in the area is now on hold.

In Liberia, UNHCR is responding to the escalating influx with plans for a second camp. "We are also increasing our capacity to transfer people to the 15 designated villages or to the existing Bahn camp, where there are basic services such as health care, education and clean water," Fleming said.

The majority of refugees in Liberia are still hosted in more than 76 border villages, most of which are in remote, inaccessible locations.

Day 362 - Yes, I'm still a nerd

Day 362 - Yes, I'm still a nerd

Upon the successful completion of Peace Corps service, all volunteers receive a “re-adjustment allowance,” which, as the name implies, is intended to help ease the adjustment back into life in the US. Many volunteers use this money to purchase practical things such as cars, down payments on apartments, new business suits, etc. Others use it to pamper themselves with expensive food or luxurious vacations. As the days wound down to the end of our service, all of us began discussing what we would be spending our money on.

And what was I most excited about buying? A new hard drive for my computer. Not so much because having more gigabytes is really exciting, but because I was looking forward to installing it myself. The hard drive came in the mail today, but I had spent all day yesterday taking the computer apart to clean it. I took everything out, including the fan, keyboard, screen, and speakers, and dusted and cleaned it all to get ready for the new hard drive. While it probably did need all that cleaning, I mostly just did it for fun. I may no longer be an engineering student, but I'm still a nerd.

house cleaning website - Home Comforts:

Home Comforts: The Art and Science of Keeping House

Home Comforts: The Art and Science of Keeping House

Home Comforts is something new. For the first time in nearly a century, a sole author has written a comprehensive book about housekeeping. This is not a dry how-to manual, nor a collection of odd tips and hints, a cleaning book, a history book, or an arid encyclopedia compiled by a committee or an institute. Home Comforts is a readable explanation for both beginners and experts of all the domestic arts -- choosing fabrics, keeping the piano in tune, caring for books, making a good fire in the fireplace and avoiding chimney fires, ironing and folding, setting up a good reading light, keeping surfaces free of food pathogens, and everything else that modern people might want to do for themselves in their homes. But this reliable and thorough book on the practicalities of housekeeping is also an argument for the importance of private life and the comforts offered by housekeeping.
Cheryl Mendelson is a philosopher, lawyer, sometime professor, and a homemaker, wife, and mother. Home Comforts is based on her domestic education, which she acquired while growing up on a farm in the hills of Greene County, in southwestern Pennsylvania, from her grandmothers, aunts, and mother. Learning from the distinct domestic styles of her native Appalachian relatives and her Italian immigrant relatives, she appreciated early on how important domestic customs are to a sense of comfort and identity in life. She writes out of love and respect for her subject, and hopes to inspire others to develop the affection and respect for home life and housework she was fortunate to have learned.
Mendelson addresses the meanings as well as the methods of housekeeping with a keen sense of the history and values involved. The result is a warm, good-humored, engagingly written book with a message and a point of view, one that is overflowing with useful reflections and information. The clarity, breadth, and depth of the information collected here are unparalleled. You can read Home Comforts for thoughtful entertainment or use its ample index to help you find the answers to practical domestic questions. There is nothing quite like it.
Among this book's unique features:
· A skeptical discussion of the excessive use of disinfectants in the home. · How to iron a dress shirt and how to fold sheets. · How to make up a bed with hospital corners. · How to do all basic sewing stitches. · How to choose proper sizes for sheets, tablecloths, and other household linens. · How to set the table for informal and formal meals. · Expert recommendations for safe food storage. · The most exhaustive and reliable information on fabrics, textile fibers, and their laundering, drying, and other care that exists for nonprofessionals. · A thorough explanation of care labels and why and how you should often (carefully) disregard them. · Housekeeping guidelines for people with pets or with allergies. · What to do about dust mites. · How to clean and care for wood, china and crystal, jewelry, ceramic tile, metals, and more. · Guides to stain and spot removal. · Extensive recommendations for improving home safety. · A summary of laws applicable to the home, including privacy, accident liability, contracts, and domestic employees.·
· 200 Elegant, Clear Drawings ·

Virtually everyone enjoys a crisply ironed dress shirt, clean sheets on a well-made bed, and a savory home-cooked meal. Yet housekeeping today stands as a somewhat neglected, if not maligned, job. But as author Cheryl Mendelson points out in Home Comforts, keeping house well can be a rewarding position--it allows you to provide for the physical and emotional comfort of loved ones. It's also not an easy job--there's much to be learned about properly managing a home, and Mendelson has set out to provide a guide to doing just that.
Mendelson, a homemaker, lawyer, and mother, learned about housekeeping from an early age from her grandmothers, one Appalachian, the other Italian. The two grandmothers taught her that although different ways of keeping house can be appropriate, there are generally smarter, faster, and more creative ways of housekeeping that make it less of a chore and more of an art. In a practical, authoritative tone, Mendelson discusses the ins and outs of homemaking, such as washing dishes, recommended cleaning methods for various surfaces, housekeeping for those with pets or allergies, and emergency preparedness and safety procedures.
Mendelson's well-researched book includes meticulous sections on food (for example, which foods belong in the fridge versus the pantry, food storage times, picking the freshest fruits and vegetables, and keeping your kitchen and food sanitary) as well as laundry (caring for various fabrics, how to read--and read between the lines of--clothing care labels, and removing stains). Mendelson covers a lot of ground, and as she herself points out, readers shouldn't feel required to do everything mentioned in the book--simply pick the activities that seem appropriate for your particular home. This is a comprehensive reference book that should serve homemakers well and induce a greater appreciation for the effort and specialized knowledge that go into keeping house. --Kris Law

Solomon Isaiah Spreewell: Throw-Up, Pigs & Kisses

Solomon Isaiah Spreewell: Throw-Up, Pigs & Kisses

Is fifth grade a year to remember or forget? Solomon Isaiah Spreewell (Sis) seems to continually ask himself this question. How many boys can say that they have gone with the wrong girl, fell face first into pig manure, saw the principal get thrown-up on, got a kiss from his teacher, watched a classmate devour a cockroach, and battled with his sister Andie and her antics daily? Sis is sure that he is the only one with problems like these. Add to these problems a well--meaning friend called Twid, and the rest of the fifth grade. With the army of help that Sis has, how does he manage to get himself into such predicaments? The question should have been how does Sis manage to get out of such predicaments. The answer is the same way he got into them, with the help of his family and friends. The results that Sis receives to each of his problems aren't always what he had hoped for; nevertheless, the results are hysterical, as sometimes the unexpected becomes the expected. Is fifth grade a year to remember or forget for Solomon Isaiah Spreewell? You'll have to read the book to find out.

california and a car crash

california and a car crash

around noon today, caroline and i got in a car accident. we're not really sure what happened, but before you worry – everyone is okay. totaled cars and bruises seem to the worst of it, thank god.

we had just gone to the bank, deposited some money. the plan was to go to lunch; caroline had told me she was having lunch with teri today, and i should go along and surprise her. we were on our way... somewhere. some cuban restaurant. neither of us remembers exactly how it went down. one second we were slowly turning right at a T intersection, and the next second, the airbags were deployed and we were spinning. caroline was saying "i'm sorry" over and over again.

it felt like minutes that we were spinning, but i'm sure it was seconds. there was some horrible strange smoke, from the airbags, that hurt to breathe. i think i rolled down the window first thing after we stopped. i heard a kid screaming.

then, if i remember, i took out my phone, dialed 911, and caroline got out the drivers side. i crawled over my hat, which i now realized wasn't on my head, and thru the drivers side, and tried to figure out what to tell them on the phone. i told them the intersection. they asked me if we needed an ambulance, and i ran around trying to see who was hurt. i wasn't the only one, some bystanders were doing the same. there was a blue car that was in the middle of the road, with a guy running around screaming angrily at caroline, "didn't you see me?? i have kids in the car!!" none of them said they were bleeding.

then i realized there was another car down the street. it was flipped over, an suv on its head. i yelled to the people standing by it to see if anyone was inside, or injured. neither. i don't know how. we feverishly paced back and forth, looking at things, trying to figure out what to do next. i was shaking so much. the ambulances came from either direction, and the cops were soon after. they collected information as i hugged caroline and shook like a leaf in the wind.

there was a tiny bump on my leg, and i could hardly feel it. i told them it wasn't serious, caroline said she had no injuries, and as they tested everyone else, we found out that absolutely everyone was ok. there was a stranger, someone standing around, that gave me a bottle of water and firmly told me to calm down – everyone was ok. thank you, for that woman.

it wasn't caroline's car, it was her brothers. she was on the phone with him. she was on the phone with all kinds of people, trying to figure out what to do. the cop called AAA for us, and soon after, a towtruck just showed up, that was not AAA, that the cop told us not to trust. he stood around talking to us for a bit, then left when we decided to wait for AAA to show up.

the street was a mess. leaking oil and washer fluid, two cars in the middle of a 4 lane road, one down the way flipped over. scraps of metal and plastic were everywhere. i was tough, trying to help out when i could, take care of business. i figured i should call my dad, before the cops do, and... because he's my dad. i stepped aside to call him, and broke down a bit. i started crying. i don't know how many people in my life have seen me cry, but it's unusual for me to be very open with my dad. i laughed and cried at the same time, i couldn't help it. it wasn't funny, it was just... emotion, escaping from my mouth. he said to double check to make sure no one's neck hurt, or that no one had an injury once the adrenaline wore down.

and just then, i got a phone call from a number i didn't know. it was one of the people from craigslist that i'd been trying really hard to get ahold of, a guy with a sailboat that i could potentially live on. now, i know i haven't been updating my blog, but i got to california on monday, and pretty much every day i've been trying my hardest to find a place to live. i really want to live on a sailboat, it's just kind of a dream of mine. and every one i've found so far hasn't worked out, and now, here, this one good looking one is calling me back. i was so calm on the phone with him. told him i'd gotten in a small (huge) accident, that i was probably (definitely) not able to come see the boat today, and that i would call him back tomorrow to figure out a good time in the next day or so to come check it out (how??). he was very chill about it.

i had just finished collecting myself, when caroline came over, to tell me that the lunch we were going to before all this happened... it wasn't me surprising teri. it was a handful of my friends surprising me. they all knew i was back in town, even tho i hadn't told anyone really yet, and they wanted to make me feel better after the last few months being kind of rough, and welcome me back to town. i cant remember everyone she said was in on it, but i remember teri, alma, pacho, yanko, nicole, janet, thomas, romina, jamie, mimi... these kids were at the restaurant, waiting to throw me a surprise welcome back lunch. i lost it, i

Our camp's backyard - nice eh?

Our camp's backyard - nice eh?

25 feet down a a forest path from our campsite, was this lovely little stretch of river. If it is hot, you could take an invigorating swim here. If it is cold, you could flip a dry fly. Or if you are just wanting to relax and enjoy the scene you can stare into the moving current, then snap a photo, to share with others, and to remember the moment by.

Fly Flipper (of Flickr Foto Fame) and her husband, Jason - - know the Clearwater River Basin area of Idaho well. They both love and respect the great outdoors. Both dry fly fish (and are good at it). Both (and here is the important one) are Washington State Cougars. Throw in that Fly Flipper uses (well), the same DSLR and lenses that I recently purchased. They know how to camp, show up on time, and have outstanding attitudes towards life, that rain, mud or slow fishing at times, can’t dampen. So, when I got an invite to join these two for some camping, hiking, fly fishing, photography, and remote forest road exploration - - I jumped at the chance.

Following, paper plate instructions I easily found their well organized campsite. A camp fire was blazing when I pulled in and added my pickup truck, with bed in back, to the camp.
The weather was unusual. It felt like fall much of the time, especially when our activity caused us to wander up high in the mountains on the Idaho-Montana border. It rained. At times it ceased; at times it fell lightly; and at other times it came down exceedingly hard. When that happened we retreated to shelter and waited it out.

The scenery in the area is spectacular and we had a lot of fun enjoying the diverse wildlife in the area. We saw: white tail deer, elk, weasel, moose, and many nesting and fishing - osprey.
The osprey fledglings provided comic relief as we watched the parents continue to feed them while the time was coming near, when they would stop doing so, to encourage them to take flight from the nest for the first time and learn to “fish for themselves”.

We kept a clean, organized and secure camp, and as a result, the local camp chipmunk became perturbed with us. He got his revenge the first night, when between rainstorms, he found Fly Flipper and Jason’s TP supply, under a tarp and turned it into a shredded art form.
My guess is there is currently a chipmunk in Idaho, sleeping in a nest lined with soft white shredded paper, as I write this note.

At the end of a day of fly fishing, exploring back roads, or photographing and viewing wildlife, we sat, as campers do, and stared into the campfire, sharing stories, memories, and a little about ourselves and what makes each of us as individuals, tick.

So, now back home, I carry with me memories of: friendship; camp fires; cold clear mountain rivers and creeks; mountains shrouded in mist and rain clouds; sleeping warm and comfy under the canopy of my truck, listening to the rain patter on the fiberglass canopy, a little fly fishing; some photography (at least one campsite photo was staged), and wildlife ranging from large young moose, expert osprey fishing the rivers better than we, and an unseen but understood, tiny camp chipmunk - - with an attitude.

Fly Flipper and Jason. Thank you.

Sue's Actual Skull

Sue's Actual Skull

Sue's acutal skull is not on display on her body below because of it's massive size and weight (600 lbs, 272kg). Instead a fiberglass model sits on the body.

Here's a few tibits of information on parts of Sue's skull:

Braincase
Look inside the skull and you'll see the bony structure that once held Sue's brain. Although the brain itself did not fossilize, CT scans of the braincase show that it was about a foot long (30.5cm).

Ear
The internal structure of Sue's ear was much like yours, and did the same jobs -- detecting sounds and maintaining balance.

Antorbital fenestra
(an-OR-bit-ul fen-ESS-truh). The Latin name for this opening means "the window in front of the eye socket." It's a special feature that only dinosaurs and some of their close relatives have.

Eye socket
Its shape and location tell us Sue's eyes faced forward, much like yours. This means Sue had some depth perception and could tell how far away something was.

Nostril
Based on the length of the snout and the size of structures within Sue's skull, scientists believe that T. rex had a very keen sense of smell.

Teeth
Sue's mouth held 58 very large, very sharp teeth. Like all dinosaurs, Sue had a never-ending supply of teeth. As one fell out another grew in to replace it. Can you spot any of these new teeth?

Stapes
This is a slender bone resembling a rod that is connected Sue's eardrum to her inner ear. Bones this tiny and fragile almost never become fossilized. In fact, Sue's stapes is the first one ever discovered in a T. rex. An observant perparator found it by accident while cleaning the rocky matrix out of Sue's skull.
